Jan 26 – no “policy” today, just threats

I know this main page is only supposed to be dedicated to hard policy, but this item is just too hard to ignore…

Trump’s pen didn’t use up any ink today, but The Donald did threaten to make Mexico pay for his border wall by imposing a 20 percent tax on all imports into the United States from Mexico, raising billions of dollars that would supposedly cover the cost of the new barrier (except for 75 miles that goes through the Tohono O’odham Nation in Arizona ’cause the tribe leader said, “over my dead body”).

Get ready, because the American people, including the Trump Supporters, will take a hit when we purchase some of the $296 billion of Mexican imports we consume.  Get ready to pay more for cars and car parts, TV’s and other appliances, produce, beer, and a very long list of consumer goods.  And of course, Mexico will never retaliate on the $400 billion they import from us (which would result in a precipitous drop in exports to Mexico, hurting US manufacturers, and US jobs).  Smart.

We’re off to a great start…
